Former Browns quarterback handed rough news that further shows Cleveland made the right call to trade him away
The Browns traded him this past offseason and now his career is taking another turn.
The Cleveland Browns’ first move of the offseason to address the quarterback position was trading Dorian Thompson-Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles along with a draft pick in exchange for Kenny Pickett.
Cleveland had selected Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft as a developmental option for the backup quarterback role. That plan never materialized, and after two seasons in Cleveland, the Browns shipped him to Philadelphia for a fresh start.
Since then, Thompson-Robinson has been with the Eagles, learning behind Jalen Hurts and backup Tanner McKee. Now, the former UCLA standout is looking for another NFL opportunity.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson waived by Eagles ahead of cutdowns
Thompson-Robinson failed to secure the Eagles’ third quarterback spot, unable to unseat McKee as Hurts’ backup. During his two seasons in Cleveland, he appeared in 15 games with five starts, completing 53 percent of his passes for 880 yards. The bigger issue: he threw just one touchdown pass against 10 interceptions.
Thompson-Robinson is unlikely to be claimed and land on a 53-man roster. His best chance to stick in the league will likely be on a practice squad, waiting for a call-up.
Turnovers and sloppy play have plagued the third-year quarterback, and that continued this preseason. Against the Bengals, he threw an interception and also fumbled. In two exhibition games, he went 10-of-18 passing for 73 yards.
It’s tough news for the former highly touted UCLA recruit who once carried big expectations into the NFL as a Browns draft pick. Now, the question is what’s next for Thompson-Robinson.
