Emergence from young player allows Chiefs to move on from veteran as they trim their roster down by Tuesday’s deadline
K.C. has quality depth there.
As the Kansas City Chiefs work towards trimming down their roster from 90 to 53 players by Tuesday’s 3 p.m. CT deadline, they have release veteran safety Mike Edwards.
This is a mildly surprising move given that Edwards was the oldest player (28) in the entire secondary, but the Chiefs seem comfortable with the young players they have. Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks unquestionably have the starting safety roles locked down, and the coaching staff likes the versatility that Chamarri Conner and Chris Roland-Wallace bring to the table, including special teams play.
Edwards is a strong candidate to return to the Chiefs’ practice squad if he chooses. As a vested veteran, he does not have to go through waivers and is free to sign with another team. Edwards is entering his seventh NFL season after entering the league as a third-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This was his second tenure in Kansas City after spending the 2023 season with the Chiefs. That year Edwards appeared in all 17 games and made five starts, recording 51 total tackles (two for loss), one sack, one interception, five passes defensed, and two fumble recoveries — one of which he returned 101 yards for a touchdown.
Edwards bounced around with several teams in 2024 before returning to K.C. this past offseason. He sustained a hamstring injury during the Chiefs’ Week 2 preseason matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, which caused him to miss the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears. It is unknown how serious the injury is or if it contributed at all to his release.
