Raiders should call one AFC foe about a Jakobi Meyers trade if they want to try and get a WR back with some untapped potential
The Las Vegas Raiders could end up trading Jakobi Meyers, and if they do, the Steelers with Calvin Austin may be intriguing.
News struck on Monday over and over again with the Las Vegas Raiders, but the biggest news of all was obviously WR Jakobi Meyers requesting a trade. The Raiders traded for Cleveland Browns QB Kenny Pickett, signed former Buffalo Bills WR Amari Cooper, and now they have to make a decision regarding Meyers.
Meyers requested a trade because he wants a contract extension and isn’t seeing eye to eye with the Raiders’ new regime on what he’s worth. So, they could trade him, and if they do, there is an AFC team that would likely send back a player with a ton of potential to the Raiders.
Raiders should call the Pittsburgh Steelers about a potential Jakobi Meyers trade
Meyers wants WR1 type of money, and while he is the Raiders’ WR1, he isn’t really a WR1. His first-ever 1,000-yard season came last year, and you could say it was a bit of an empty 1,000-yard season. The Raiders were always losing and throwing the ball a ton. Now, he would be a great WR2, one of the best in the league, actually.
And that’s what the Steelers need next to DK Metcalf.
It’s no secret that the Steelers have been in the trade market even after the blockbuster swing that was DK Metcalf. Because weeks later, they traded away their WR2, George Pickens, and that spot has yet to be filled, despite the team’s claims about how bullish they are on their current group. The Steelers need an easy button on offense. Someone with proven ability to separate and win over the middle of the field. That just so happens to be Meyers’ forte. A perfect Z WR with excellent blocking and route running, he is an ideal pairing alongside Metcalf in Arthur Smith’s offense. If I’m the Steelers, I’m going for the rare player-for-player swap, but I’ll throw in some draft compensation as well. Let’s do Calvin Austin III and 2026 sixth for Meyers. – Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports Pittsburgh
Austin is a guy who, coming into the league out of Memphis, everyone thought would be an explosive WR, similar to Tre Tucker, but many thought he would be even better than that. He hasn’t done much since entering the league, but he’s also not been in great situations and could probably just use a change of scenery.
Getting a guy who could be used as a weapon for Geno Smith, with a bit of untapped potential, would be great for the Raiders, and then throwing the sixth-round pick in would be the cherry on top.
I doubt the Raiders trade Meyers. Just because he requested a trade doesn’t mean anything. Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders and Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals requested trades during contract disputes, and both came out with new deals.
This could be a similar situation, but if it’s not, I’m definitely calling Pittsburgh.
