5 players the Washington Commanders can still add that would perfectly fit the remaining needs after roster cuts
The Commanders could add these 5 players before the season starts.
The Washington Commanders cut their roster to its initial 53 players, but there are still plenty of opportunities to add to the roster with a pool of quality players available after cuts around the league.
The team only kept five wide receivers, five corners, and has room to improve at a couple of positions as well. Here’s a look at who the Commanders can sign that could make a major difference this season. Some are through the waivers, and others are ready to be signed right away.
WR Gabe Davis
Keeping only five wide receivers showed that the answer for the final spot wasn’t on the roster, and we saw that during the preseason games as well. Gabe Davis is still somehow available at only 26 years old. Davis recently played with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, starting nine games with 239 receiving yards.
Before that, Davis played on the Buffalo Bills and was a major part of the offense, finishing 2023 with 746 yards and averaging about seven touchdowns a season. Davis suffered a meniscus tear during Week 11 last season, so his health will be a factor. However, he has been working out for teams, indicating he’s healthy enough. He can be a great red zone threat for the Commanders, and they would also love his blocking ability on the outside.
DT Marlon Tuipulotu
The Commanders filled out the defensive line, but they can upgrade over Eddie Goldman in the interior of the line. Tuipulotu was drafted by the Eagles in 2021, but fell down the depth chart as the team invested heavily in the position, and was released in 2024. The Chiefs picked him up as a depth piece, but he was recently released again. Still, he’s only 26 and has a lot of traits teams will want.
He would be an instant upgrade to help stop the run, which is a major need this season. The Commanders can sign him any time, and don’t have to worry about waivers, but there will be plenty of teams interested. Signing Tuipulotu would help build the youth of the roster, allowing him to continue developing.
K John Parker Romo
The New England Patriots had a tough kicking competition between John Parker Romo and rookie Andres Borregales, and they gave the job to the rookie they invested a sixth-round pick in. Parker Romo went 11 for 12 last season for the Minnesota Vikings and nailed a 55-yard kick. He had a near-flawless offseason and only had two kicks during the preseason, but he made a 57-yarder, and Patriots fans thought he had the edge in the competition.
Matt Gay hasn’t looked the part in preseason, and the Commanders need to bring in competition, even after giving him a fully guaranteed one-year deal. It’s not worth losing games over and looking back as a mistake that had no solution before the season.
CB Jalyn Armour-Davis
Armour-Davis will be a hot name on the waivers, and the Commanders need to add him if they get a chance for a couple of reasons. His 6-foot-1 frame and 4.3 speed fit the mold of a Dan Quinn corner, and he might be a need as well. The cornerback room is deep, but they only kept five. There were reports that the Commanders were listening to interest from other teams on Noah Igbinoghene, so they could add another before the season.
The 25-year-old corner had a great offseason and ended up being a surprise release. Armour-Davis intercepted Sam Hartman in the team’s preseason game and showed flashes every game he played this offseason. He has so much potential to hit and would be an excellent addition to the defense.
WR Hunter Renfrow
Yes, I said it. Hunter Renfrow is a real option despite still making his comeback to the NFL. Carolina Panthers fans were surprised Renfrow got released during roster cuts after having an impressive offseason, but the WR room was deep, and they’re leaning into a lot of their draft picks instead. Imagine a spacing WR like Renfrow in offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. It’s a great fit.
Renfrow still possesses precise route-running and great hands. He wouldn’t have to be a legit starter for the Commanders, but bringing him in as a depth piece is a no-brainer if they miss out on WR waiver options with the 29th place on the list. He only took a year off, and he’s still 29 years old. That’s a solid one-year flier who can produce until the offseason.
The Commanders still have plenty of options to add to their roster, and they may have to go about signing players or claiming who they like on waivers before the deadline. The regular season is just around the corner, and these players can still make a significant impact for the team in various ways.
