The post-training camp cut-down waiver wire is now closed, and there’s some good news all around. No recently waived Lions players were claimed, and the Lions walked out with two new edge rushers who are pretty good depth upgrades right away.

The first is Tyler Lacy. The former fourth-round pick spent his entire career with the Jagaurs and was a starter there in 2024. Lacy has played the majority of his snaps at defensive tackle, but he’s also played some edge. He won’t start in Detroit, but he’s a nice rotational piece on the inside, adds some run-stuffing ability, and is a good tackler.

Then, there’s Tyrus Wheat. He went undrafted in 2023 and has spent the last two seasons with the Cowboys, spending most of his time on their practice squad. Wheat played against the Lions in 2024 and had a pretty solid outing with 41 snaps, two tackles, and a pressure on Jared Goff. He’s coming off a good preseason, recording eight pressures in three games.

The Lions still have one spot left, so if you’re hoping for Za’Darius Smith or something else, it can still happen. Keep in mind that when players are claimed from the waiver wire, the team claiming them has to keep them on the roster for four games. So both of these guys are immediately part of the 53-man roster.
