Miami HC Mario Cristobal “fired up” about the one thing that will either make or break the team heading into the Notre Dame matchup
Miami HC Mario Cristobal is very confident entering the 2025 CFB season
If you watched the Miami Hurricanes during the 2024 college football season, you saw an explosive offense led by quarterback Cam Ward. Head coach Mario Cristobal had the top-scoring offense in the entire country, one that averaged a stellar 43.9 points per game. Ward was chucking the football all over the yard, and with how bad the Miami defense is, they needed to be.
Turning the page to this offseason, Coach Cristobal had to completely remake that poor defensive unit. They have a new defensive coordinator in Corey Hetherman coming over from the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and a completely remade defensive roster. Depending on how good or bad that defense is, the Hurricane offense could once again need to be elite.
With Ward off to the NFL, Miami needed to find a new quarterback this offseason. They settled on former Georgia signal caller Carson Beck, who is coming off a season where he committed 14 turnovers. There have been some very good moments for Beck over the last two years, but some poor ones as well. Which version Miami gets will determine just how good this team can be.
Set to open their season against Notre Dame on Sunday night, Coach Cristobal has been busy answering questions about Beck and this Hurricane offense. In an interview with Miami legend Michael Irvin, Coach Cristobal couldn’t help but gush about his new signal caller. He is very confident about what the former Georgia quarterback can do this season.
“We’re really fired up about where it’s at right now. Carson Beck has come in and even though he couldn’t participate in the spring, he did participate in all the walkthroughs, the protections, the running game. He was back there taking every rep mentally and systematically.
“He knows what we do, very familiar with that. I don’t know what his record was as a starter but at this time last year Carson was a projected top round pick and Cam was a projected fifth-sixth-seventh round pick and a year later, Cam got drafted first and now we have the ability to work with Carson… He’s smart. He’s tough. He’s fast. He’s mobile, super accurate arm, strong arm, really smart, understands protections, and he’s a really excellent leader.
“He leads by example. He leads with competitiveness. He leads by getting in here and grinding on film and helping others understand what he sees, what he’s trying to accomplish, and trying to help them be the best they can be. He’s been fantastic.”
Hearing a coach having confidence in his quarterback isn’t much of a surprise. Heading Coach Cristobal describing Beck as “fast” and “mobile” does feel a bit over the top. There is a chance that Beck has a good season, but his impact will be from getting the ball out on time and accurately. We aren’t talking about a supremely gifted talent at the quarterback position.
The Fighting Irish have a very good defense on paper, but they will be challenged in a hostile environment. If they are able to harass and limit Beck enough, they should be able to leave Hard Rock Stadium with a victory. How well Beck performs could be a huge indicator of which team comes out on top.
