UPDATE: The Packers have pulled it off. Green Bay acquired Micah Parsons for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

Some time ago, it could be insane to consider that the Dallas Cowboys would actually trade edge defender Micah Parsons away, so it felt like the Green Bay Packers were just a tool to both drive his Market, from a player’s perspective, and as a threat, from a Cowboys’ perspective. After all, Jerry Jones could still see Green Bay as the NFL’s Siberia, as Justis Mosqueda masterfully explained.

However, the situation is materially changing. ESPN insiders Adam Schefter, Dan Graziano, and Todd Archer are mentioning that the Cowboys now appear to be open to a move.

“Several teams have spoken to the Dallas Cowboys about a potential Micah Parsons’ trade and for the first time the Cowboys appear willing to at least listen, according to multiple sources. No trade is imminent, but another team always could be aggressive enough to make it come together quickly, per sources. The Cowboys would like to resolve the situation, one way or another, in the coming days with their season opener next Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Jerry Jones reportedly offered a five-year deal to Parsons worth $40.5 million a year, but agent David Mulugheta wasn’t involved. The parties have not negotiated since. Green Bay’s offer to the player would be around $45 million on yearly average.

Rumors indicate that the Packers are willing to make a big offer for both the Cowboys, in a trade package, and for Parsons in a huge long-term contract extension. Right now, the player is under a $21.324 million fifth-year option, but the Cowboys have the ability to apply three consecutive franchise tags after that.

“First of all, I can’t talk about any players on any of the other teams, but I think every opportunity that’s out there that we think could help the Packers, we’re going to take a long look at,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said on Wednesday. “If that opportunity makes sense to us, then we’ll do it, and if it doesn’t, we won’t.”

Even though it’s hard to make a decision like that considering the necessary compensation, the Packers would see Parsons as a transformative piece.

“Every decision affects your football team. Obviously, there are so many different factors in it,” Gutekunst added. “Who the player is, medical, cap-wise. But yeah, I think you have to look at everything. Any opportunity to help your football team, you have to look at and discuss as a group. We do that all the time, almost daily.”

Going back to 2018, Gutekunst’s first year as a general manager, he tried to acquire Khalil Mack—but he went to the Chicago Bears instead. Now, a new opportunity to trade for an elite edge defender just entering his prime might be emerging once again.
