ESPN analyst and former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy handed Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin some tremendous bulletin board material on Friday.
The Buckeyes are set to open the season in Columbus on Saturday against the Texas Longhorns.
McElroy said on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning on Friday that he’s leaning toward Texas winning the game because he doesn’t think Sayin was very good in limited action last season (Sayin attempted 12 passes while backing up Will Howard and primary backup Devin Brown).
“I lean Texas,” said McElroy. “Part of the reason why is because I just don’t think Julian Sayin was very good [last season]. Granted, it’s 12 reps from last year. But man, there were some bad misses. He had 84 yards or whatever, but almost all of that came on one throw on which a guy was wide open. Every contested throw he made last year was kind of off the mark. So we’ll see. I’ll be curious to see how he handles it. I think Arch (Manning) is significantly better than Sayin, and I think that’s ultimately what determines the outcome. But we will see for sure.”
Sayin is a talented player who we’ve barely seen in game action. I’m not sure it’s fair to say that Arch Manning is significantly better — though it’s certainly true that Manning has more experience (which should be an advantage for Texas in this matchup).
Manning threw just five passes as a true freshman in 2023 before everyone was wowed by his performances in two starts as a redshirt freshman in 2024.
Sayin is in a similar situation, except he’s being thrust full-time into a starting role as a sophomore. It’s a big spot for the youngster, but if he plays free, plays confident, and plays with an edge, he has a shot to have a really good game against the Longhorns.
I don’t think Sayin and the Buckeyes need any extra bulletin board material to be motivated for this matchup. But if McElroy is going to hand some out, Sayin and his teammates might as well use it.
