Micah Parsons has been a Packer for just one day and is already doing something nobody has done in a century for Green Bay
Edge rusher has to choose his new jersey number.
Micah Parsons is clearly happy to be with the Green Bay Packers. One day after being acquired from the Dallas Cowboys and signing a four-year, $188 million extension, he had a big decision to make: It’s the number he will wear on the Packers. UPDATE: He said in his first press conference that he will wear number 1.
Because wide receiver Jayden Reed already wears number 11, getting that from him isn’t automatic. On social media, some Packers fans were considering the possibility of Parsons wearing 23, his high school number, which is available in Green Bay since the team released cornerback Jaire Alexander earlier this offseason.
However, Parsons wanted to go a different route.
On X, the edge rusher asked followers if he should wear the number “0” or “1.” Well, it could be difficult for him to convince the Packers to allow him to wear number 1, but the franchise knows how special he is. Although it’s not officially retired by the franchise, number 1 had unofficially been retired as a tribute to founder, coach, and player Curly Lambeau. Yes, the Packers already recognize him with the name of the stadium, but nobody else has ever worn his jersey number. It’s been a century.
The league has been more flexible with number rules during the past few years and started allowing players to wear the number “0” in 2023 and expanding the list of numbers players from each position can wear. However, Green Bay hasn’t given the jersey 0 to anyone at this point. Because Parsons is such a special player, though, they will allow him to take over number 1.
Retired numbers
The Packers have officially retired six jersey numbers so far: 3 (Tony Canadeo), 4 (Brett Favre), 14 (Don Hutson), 15 (Bart Starr), 66 (Ray Nitschke), and 92 (Reggie White). Just like number 1, 5 is also unofficially retired, thanks to Paul Hornung, although it has been worn for training camp and preseason games. The Packers have not and will not give number 12 out, either, since it will eventually be retired as a reference to Aaron Rodgers.
