Tom Brady thinks the Ohio State Buckeyes may have did Arch Manning a favor in the long run after Ohio State handled the Texas Longhorns
Perhaps the best to ever do it thinks it may be a good thing for Arch in the long run.
On the defensive side of the football, the Ohio State Buckeyes came out firing on all cylinders against the Texas Longhorns. The No. 1 Buckeyes didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter. Their performance against Arch Manning and company was everything defensive coordinator Matt Patricia could have asked for.
There was plenty of hype leading into the big Week 1 matchup, most of it centered on Manning, who entered the season as the Heisman favorite. In his first road start at the college level, Manning went 17-of-30 for 170 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Plain and simple, the Buckeyes made him look average, and that’s not an easy thing to do. In truth, the hype surrounding Manning may have been a bit unfair.
Tom Brady weighs in on Arch Manning after the Ohio State game
Former Michigan quarterback and NFL legend Tom Brady knows a thing or two about succeeding at the position, and he suggested that this early setback could actually be a blessing in disguise for Manning. After all, it’s only Week 1, and there’s plenty of room for him to grow.
“The blessing is there needs to be resilience built up in a quarterback as well,” Brady told Cris Collinsworth during a Pro Football Focus interview. “Even though he didn’t have his best game and they lost, if he uses this to his advantage, he’s gonna be tougher for it. And he’s gonna have a better next game because of it. I always felt like you’ve gotta deal with a lot of adversity from a quarterback standpoint to toughen you up to be the true leader for the organization.”
Facing Ohio State on the road was a tough first real test for any quarterback, even Manning. Patricia’s defense disguised looks effectively and disrupted the Longhorns’ offense throughout the night. Not only was Manning held in check, but Texas’s top wideout, Ryan Wingo, was limited to just two catches for 35 yards. For a unit breaking in several new starters, the Buckeyes’ defense couldn’t have performed much better.
Ohio State will host Grambling State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in what should be a far less high-stakes contest for the Buckeyes.
