Bryce Young gets key help back in the passing game with a trusted target returning from injury in time for Week 1 against Jaguars
A big boost for the offense.
The Carolina Panthers have had to deal with some tough injury news that changed some plans throughout the week heading into the Week 1 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but got some good injury news regarding a key offensive play-maker on Wednesday.
Tight end Tommy Tremble was not listed on the team’s injury report, as good a sign as any that the team’s big-bodied pass catcher will be back in action on Sunday.
Tremble missed considerable time this offseason and the entire preseason after undergoing back surgery in May. Carolina activated Tremble off the PUP list two weeks ago to allow him to ramp back up before the start of the season.
“Tommy’s ready to rock,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Wednesday. “Had a really great practice today. He feels great, he’s said that much.”
Tommy Tremble’s return will bring a big boost to the passing game
Having Tremble back on the field on Sunday will be huge for the Panthers’ passing game, giving quarterback Bryce Young a dependable target in the middle of the field to turn to.
Tremble signed a two-year extension with the team this offseason and is expected to be much more involved offensively coming off a season where he set a career-high with 234 receiving yards.
“He was huge, he’s going to continue to be huge,” Young said back in May. “Tommy is a super hard worker, someone who brings so much intensity and ferocity to the position, to the team, to us as a group, as a unit. I know we’re expecting him to be back. He’s going to be a huge part of the offense moving forward, too.”
Tremble’s return can help round out the passing game alongside wide receivers Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, and Hunter Renfrow.
As for some other injury news, Canales shared that left tackle Ikem Ekwonu was out there on Wednesday running and moving around working back from an appendectomy he had done on Sunday. Canales added that Friday will be a big day to determine whether or not Ekwonu can play against the Jaguars has he continues to recover.
“Tomorrow, he’ll do a little bit more and then the hope is for Friday to get him in the individual period. See him get in his stance, move around, hit some bags, and do some things to be able to make that decision,” Canales said.
Meanwhile, Yosh Nijman and Brady Christensen continued to rotate in that left tackle spot. No determination has been made regarding which player would start if Ekwonu can’t play.
