There are plenty of folks who think the LSU Tigers should be ranked No. 1 in the nation after their season-opening win against Clemson.

Former LSU starting pitcher Paul Skenes, however, is not one of those folks.

It’s not that Skenes is down on LSU — it’s just that he doesn’t care about football.

Skenes, who is in his second season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, told Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts this week that he didn’t even watch LSU’s win against Clemson this past weekend.

“I have no idea, I really don’t,” said Skenes during an appearance on On Base when asked if he thinks LSU should be ranked No. 1. “I didn’t watch the game….even when I was there (at LSU) — like, I don’t know anything about football. I knew Jayden Daniels was good. I didn’t know he was going to win the Heisman. I didn’t know he was going to be Jayden Daniels.

“I watched the games and it was like, ‘Oh LSU is winning’ or ‘LSU is losing’ — that’s all I got….I never played any other sports. The only sport that actually interests me is baseball. And the other ones, I don’t know what’s going on.”

Paul Skenes appreciates the atmosphere at LSU football games

Skenes may not know what’s going on during LSU football games, but he at least appreciates the game day atmosphere in Baton Rouge.

“I mean, I got thrown into it,” said Skenes. “I went to LSU vs Alabama the year I was there. It was the coolest sporting even I’ve ever been to. I remember one of the LSU cornerbacks picked off Bryce Young in the end zone. And it’s 100,000 people going crazy and I’m looking up and I’m like, this could be the highlight of that kid’s career….he picked him off in the end zone. I don’t know how it happened or anything like that.”

Skenes appreciates LSU football for what it is, but don’t expect him to be skipping a bullpen session to check out a Tigers game. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be tuning in to watch LSU this fall.
