Week 1 was a gut-punch loss for the Cleveland Browns because of how it unfolded against the Cincinnati Bengals. Cleveland fell 17-16 in a game where they outgained Cincinnati 327-141 in total yardage. Miscues in the form of dropped passes, turnovers, and missed kicks proved disastrous, leaving the Browns 0-1 to start the season.
Cleveland’s top wideout Jerry Jeudy had what could fairly be called two drops. The first came on a low pass that he tried to dig out but popped into the air. It was a tough play, but one Jeudy probably should have made. The second came on a fourth down that would have put the Browns in field-goal range. Despite leading the team with 66 receiving yards on the day, Jeudy’s 2025 debut left room for improvement.
Jerry Jeudy makes statement on what the Week 1 loss means
“Oh yeah, this game will most certainly help define our team. We either bounce back or settle,” Jeudy said after the game. The Browns’ No. 1 receiver is a player they’ll lean on heavily moving forward. Beyond Jeudy, rookie running back Dylan Sampson, rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr., and Cedric Tillman chipped in to support the passing game. While there weren’t many big plays through the air, Joe Flacco turned in a solid performance outside of two interceptions—both of which could reasonably be pinned on the wideouts.
“Flacco did great today. He threw the ball downfield, and we had chances to get field goals, get points. But the two turnovers hit our hands—unfortunate picks. I think he did a great job today,” Jeudy said of his quarterback.
Cleveland’s offense already looks better than it did last season, and simply making their kicks would have given them a 20-17 victory. The challenge ahead is steep, with the Baltimore Ravens up next followed by three straight games against the NFC North. As Jeudy pointed out, this is a defining stretch for the Browns. They can either let this loss set the tone for another rough start, or they can find a way to bounce back.
