Jakobi Meyers just gave the Raiders another reason to pay him without saying anything, but instead by making history
The Las Vegas Raiders beat the New England Patriots in Week 1 with a good game from Jakobi Meyers.
With a win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders are 1-0, and now they have even more of a reason to pay Jakobi Meyers the money he is asking for. That doesn’t mean he will get it, but he’s letting his play do the talking in the best way possible. Here is what the Raiders PR team tweeted out about Meyers’ day:
“WR Jakobi Meyers has five catches so far today, notching his 42nd career game with 5+ receptions, tying Austin Ekeler (42) for the 12th most in NFL history among undrafted players. Meyers also passes Adam Thielen (397) for the ninth most receptions in NFL history among undrafted players in their first seven NFL seasons. He now has 398 career catches, passing Antonio Gates (397) for the fourth most receptions in NFL history among undrafted players in their first 92 career games. WR Jakobi Meyers has now eclipsed 400 career receptions, becoming one of just nine undrafted players in NFL history to reach 400 receptions in his first seven seasons.”
Meyers is continuing to defy all odds.
Jakobi Meyers’ play on Sunday shows he could be even better with this iteration of the Raiders
Meyers is currently on a base salary of about $10.5 million per year, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Meyers has no guaranteed money left on his deal and would like to get a new deal done to stay in Las Vegas longer, while also getting some of that guaranteed money. It makes sense why the Raiders are a bit hesitant. The number he is asking for, which we aren’t exactly sure, despite all of the rumors and reports that are out there, may not line up with what Vegas wants to pay him.
They may feel that he is worth less because he hasn’t had a great season yet, besides last year, when he had a career high of 1,000 receiving yards on a bad offense, where the stats felt kind of empty. However, this year he has already shown in Week 1 that in a good offense, with a good quarterback, he can be just as productive, if not more productive. Meyers is showing, without saying anything at all, that he deserves his money. He has worked hard to get where he’s at, and he’s stayed loyal to the Raiders, despite all of the things that have happened since he’s been in town.
On Sunday, he had eight catches for 97 yards, which would have led the team in receiving if Brock Bowers hadn’t had a slightly better game with five catches for 103 yards. Meyers led the team in targets with ten, two more than Bowers. Meyers has always been on very bad teams, with either decent or okay quarterbacks, besides his rookie season when he played with Tom Brady.
Meyers is one of the best undrafted wide receivers, and even pass catchers, of all time. He has put in the work, and maybe the Raiders will continue to reward him for that. Only time will tell.
Las Vegas plays the Los Angeles Chargers next week on Monday Night Football.
