The Tennessee Vols are set to open conference play against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in Knoxville.
Tennessee is looking for its first win against Georgia since the 2016 miracle in Athens when Josh Dobbs connected with Jauan Jennings for a game-winning Hail Mary.
The Vols’ win against the Bulldogs in 2016 is Tennessee’s only win against Georgia head coach Kirby Smart (2016 was Smart’s first season at UGA).
Legendary former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier likes Tennessee’s quarterback situation
Legendary former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier was asked for his thoughts on the Tennessee vs Georgia game on Monday during his week appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast.
The head ball coach specifically pointed out that he thinks Tennessee is better off at the quarterback position after essentially trading Nico Iamaleava to UCLA for Joey Aguilar.
“I know Georgia didn’t look all that great (against Austin Peay),” said Spurrier. “Tennessee has looked very good. And of course, [against] my old school in Johnson City — East Tennessee State (Spurrier grew up in Johnson City, TN). They had, what, 72 [points against ETSU]?
“But I think Tennessee is much better off with this new quarterback (Joey Aguilar), than the one they had (Nico Iamaleava). It’s funny how that happens. Sometimes you think this guy’s the best in the world, and then all of a sudden, another guy jumps in there — he’s quite better.”
Aguilar is certainly off to a better start with Tennessee than Iamaleava is with UCLA.
Aguilar is 2-0 with 535 passing yards and five touchdowns in his first two starts with the Vols.
Iamaleava, meanwhile, is 0-2 with 391 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and two interceptions (as well as 106 rushing yards and a touchdown) in his first two starts for the Bruins.
Aguilar will get his biggest test to date on Saturday against the Bulldogs’ extremely stout defense.
Tennessee and Georgia will kick off at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday.
