Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban likes what he’s seen so far this season from Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar.
Saban, with the Tennessee river in the background, joined The Pat McAfee Show on Friday in Knoxville and he shared some thoughts on Aguilar and former Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava ahead of Tennessee’s matchup in Week 3 against the Georgia Bulldogs.
“Joey Aguilar does a great job of executing the offense,” said Saban. “He actually executes the offense, to me, a little better than even Nico did. Now, Nico was a better athlete — he can run faster and all of that. But when it comes to accuracy and decision making, Joey Aguilar does a really good job.
“That’s important for Josh Heupel’s offense. Every running play has an RPO or an advantage throw built into it. So for the quarterback to throw those accurately is really, really important. And they make explosive plays. I’m telling you, if they can run the ball against you, it is a real tough day against Tennessee. Because they’re always going to go fast. You gotta get their ass off the field on third down or you’re going to have these long extended drives where your team is going to get tired, so you’re going to be at a disadvantage.”
Georgia will be the toughest test of Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar’s career
Aguilar, who took over as Tennessee’s starting quarterback following Iamaleava’s transfer to UCLA, has been terrific for the Vols through the first two games of the season.
The California native has passed for 535 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions in Tennessee’s two wins this season.
Those two wins, however, came against Syracuse and East Tennessee State. The Bulldogs will obviously be a much tougher test for Aguilar.
We’ll find out this week just how good of a quarterback Aguilar can be in the SEC. If he has a big game against Georgia, we might see Aguilar’s name start creeping onto some early season Heisman Trophy lists.
