The New Orleans Saints roster has plenty of issues. They lack depth in the trenches. The upside at pass catcher is a bit limited, compared to many NFC counterparts. Not to mention, the quarterback room is quite unproven. Meanwhile, special teams was thought to be a strength.

So far early in the season, that hasn’t quite been the case in the kicking game, unfortunately for the black and gold.

Blake Grupe struggles continue in Week 2

The Saints kicker had an awesome offseason, according to reports. His camp was strong and consistent, while backup Charlie Smyth dealt with a bit of a rollercoaster stint. Then, in the preseason, both had strong showings, but Grupe seemed like he had truly separated himself.

Grupe looked confident, nailed long field goal attempts, and never wavered on extra points, either. After finishing last season with a great second half, many people, including probably the coaching staff, probably felt like the kicker job was one of the few on the roster with no questions.

Now, that may not be the case for the young boot. Grupe missed an attempt in the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

Then, early in the game today against the San Francisco 49ers, he missed another field goal attempt. The miss against the 49ers was only 40 yards for Grupe. It went wide right. Grupe now is tied for the lead in misses from inside 40 yards on FG attempts since he entered the NFL.

Smyth is still with the Saints, via the practice squad. We will see if he gets more opportunities to prove himself this week in practice. If so, we could see a kicker change down the road for New Orleans.
