In his press conference on Monday afternoon, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told the media that starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy will likely miss Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with an ankle injury. He seemed to suffer the injury on a strip sack in the second half of the team’s 22-6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.

McCarthy could miss as much as two to four weeks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

J.J. McCarthy suffers ankle injury, likely to miss Week 3 vs. Bengals

This is a tough development for McCarthy and the Vikings, just two games into his first season as the starting quarterback. He already missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus he suffered in the first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

His development has been tough in the first two games. He had a dominant fourth quarter in his NFL debut against the Chicago Bears with three touchdowns, making it a historic first game. Overall, it’s been up-and-down, completing 24-of-41 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. The biggest element here has been inconsistency. McCarthy has been figuring some things out on the fly with defenses showing him some different looks. He’s also struggled with the speed of the game, which is the biggest reason why the pick-six happened against the Bears.

This leaves the Vikings having to start against Carson Wentz against the Bengals on Sunday afternoon. This is why the Vikings brought in Wentz. They needed someone to come in and provide a solid baseline for the position in case McCarthy ended up missing time. It’s now coming to fruition, as Wentz will get a chance to play.

Luckily for the Vikings, Wentz is a capable quarterback who is somewhat risk-averse. He’s got a big arm, is mobile enough, and understands the offense well. Is it an ideal situation? No, but it’s solid enough with McCarthy injured.
