Steelers attempt to kill two birds with one stone after signing a run-stopping linebacker who was released by upcoming opponent
A smart move.
If you have watched the first two weeks of Pittsburgh Steelers football, you know the run defense has been unacceptable. Back-to-back weeks of over 100 yards on the ground and 30+ points allowed have been a miserable experience on that side of the ball.
That is due to what has become of the line. The Derrick Harmon injury, Keeanu Benton’s struggles, and the misuse of rookies have plagued the team’s ability to penetrate the backfield. But things haven’t been much better at the second level, as the linebackers are also struggling.
Well, following the signing of former New England Patriots LB Ja’Whaun Bentley, that could be changing.
Steelers sign LB Ja’Whaun Bentley to practice squad
Bentley is, in essence, another Elandon Roberts. He is an enforcer who has made his living by running his face straight into opposing blockers and backs. It’s really that simple when watching his tape.
“Ja’Whaun Bentley was a key part of the Patriots’ defense in recent years, but he suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Week 2 of the 2024 season that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. And then, with the new coaching staff coming in, led by Mike Vrabel, the team ultimately released him at the end of March. It’s somewhat confusing why he has yet to land with a team, considering his impressive resume, which includes a Super Bowl win. However, it seems the Steelers are a good place for former Patriots defensive starters, considering they recently signed Jabrill Peppers and now Bentley.”

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Steelers have now signed two former Pats within days of playing in Foxborough. I also know that the Bentley signing was made with the intention of strengthening the middle of that defense.
He feels like he is a prime candidate to be activated to the game day roster ahead of Sunday, meaning another revenge game could be on tap for the Steelers in Week 3.
