Nick Sirianni responds to Vic Fangio’s comments about Eagles’ DT Jalen Carter playing ‘catch-up’
Nick Sirianni was not as blunt.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn’t hesitate to call it how he sees it when it came to defensive tackle Jalen Carter’s Week 2 performance against the Kansas City Chiefs.
While he wasn’t completely dissappointed, he admitted that Carter still needed to get into better shape.
“He had some good rushes,” Fangio said. “I think he needs to round into better shape. Both he and I talked about that, and he readily admits that. I think we’ll even get more. But, I thought for everything that has gone on in his world, I thought he played pretty good.”
Despite being out of shape, Carter played 80% of the team’s defensive snaps, recording two tackles and three quarterback hits.
Nick Sirianni Dodges Vic Fangio’s Old-School Ways
While Fangio wasn’t afraid to be blunt, head coach Nick Sirianni took a more roundabout approach when it came to Carter needing to catch up to his teammates.
“He’s working his butt off to be in the best shape of his life just like all our guys,” Sirianni said. “We know that if we’re in great shape, then we can play with relentless effort and we can play with great detail. It’s hard. It’s hard to play with great detail and relentless effort when you’re not in great shape. That’s always a work in progress for every player throughout the year, is just to get yourself into game shape. Getting yourself into game shape and then maintaining it because there is no substitute for the games. You can run as many gassers as you want, or be on the versa-climber, or the bike as much as you want, but there is no substitute for playing in the game. You get in better shape as you play.”
Of course, it didn’t help that Carter missed Week 1, but that should be no excuse as he enters his third NFL season as a seasoned vet.
The next few weeks will be revealing, starting with their Week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, as we find out whether Carter is on the verge of his best season yet or stuck staying the same.
