The Buffalo Bills are undefeated after beating the Miami Dolphins in front of an excited home crowd. Bills Mafia was out in full force in the contest, making their presence felt throughout. An ugly win is still a win, with Buffalo missing key playmakers on defense, all while scoring 30 points again.

One of the biggest playmakers of the night was rookie tight end Jackson Hawes. Heading into Week 3, Hawes was the No. 1-rated tight end and the No. 1-rated rookie, according to Pro Football Focus.

After the game, Hawes spoke to Josh Reed, WIVB’s sports director, about the performance and his first career touchdown in front of the home crowd. It was a moment Hawes won’t soon forget, and neither will the fan base. He even gave fans a special nickname he has for the franchise quarterback with his response.

Jackson Hawes reveals new nickname for Josh Allen after Week 3 win

“I mean, I don’t know if you peeped it in the first part,” Hawes said. “I kind of didn’t really know what the personnel was. These Thursday games, it’s tough because it’s the first time we get to run some of these plays. We called the timeout, the coach still had faith in it, slipped a little bit there at the start. Josh just being ‘Magic Josh, ‘ you know.”

While ‘Magic Josh’ isn’t the best nickname on the planet, Hawes can call Allen whatever he wants. With his production early in the 2025 season, he’s earned it.

Outside of being an exceptional blocker and what Joe Brady referred to as the best blocking tight end he’s ever evaluated, Hawes has been hauling in some big catches in big moments.

Through three weeks, he has three catches for 39 yards and a touchdown with three targets, talk about efficiency from the rookie.

The tight end was asked if he was anticipating the ball coming to him, and he gave an inside look at how the team plans for games and his mindset whenever No. 17 has the ball in his hands.

“You always gotta anticipate with him,” Hawes said. “In walkthroughs and stuff, we’re kind of just messing around a little bit. He’ll give you some no-lookers every now and then, you gotta be ready.”

Hawes puts the team first in postgame message

He’s done a majority of his dirty work while blocking in the run game, allowing running back James Cook and the offense to shine.

Cook had over 100 yards on the ground once again, and with his touchdown, Cook tied the Bills’ franchise history for a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games. The rookie tight end was asked about his role as a blocker and if he takes pride in doing the dirty work.

“Well, first of all, it’s a blast because I got him on fantasy,” Hawes said. “Anytime I can contribute to my own team in that way is really nice. I take a lot of pride in it, James is such an exceptional runner. The whole offensive line and Dalt, Daws, Reggie are just really stout guys that they love to take the fight to guys, it’s a really great unit.

Back to his touchdown, since it was his first in his career, Josh Reed had a trick up his sleeve when asking about where the ball went.

“I think someone picked it up for me,” Hawes said. “I blacked out a little bit. I should’ve kept it. Something just told me, my inner tight end, to just spike it.”

Luckily, Keon Coleman snagged the ball, but it might cost Hawes a steak dinner because of it.

For the Bills and their fans, a new nickname, a rising star, and another win are reasons enough to be excited.
