The Cleveland Browns have a clear identity through a few weeks of the 2025 NFL season. Cleveland wants to be a physical team with an elite defense that keeps them in games, and that’s what they’ve been to this point.

Even the Baltimore Ravens game was a 10-3 game at halftime despite Cleveland losing 41-17. Cleveland’s defense again pitched a terrific game in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers, and it was a key reason they were able to stay in it and come away with a 13-10 win.

Matt LaFleur makes an honest admission about the Browns’ defense following the game

“They made it a challenge, and that’s a good defense,” the Packers head coach said. “They have good personnel; they play extremely hard. You talk about just all the little things that are cornerstones of a great defensive football team, and obviously, you have to have talent; you have to have a sound scheme, and you have to have relentless effort to the football. I think they have all that.”

Browns’ defensive facts vs. Packers

• Browns held Packers RB Josh Jacobs to just 30 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
• Cleveland’s defense held the Packers to 230 total yards and sacked QB Jordan Love five times.

That is great praise for the Browns’ defense from one of the best offensive minds that the NFL has. Cleveland held a good Packers’ offense in check, and it was the third straight game this season it held the opponent to under 250 yards. Cleveland’s offensive struggles reared their head against Green Bay, and they did not come alive until late. The defense’s first forced turnover of the year was an interception by S Grant Delpit in a clutch moment late in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland combined the defensive performance with timely special teams late in the game when it blocked a kick that set up Andre Szmyt’s 55-yard winning field goal. Denzel Ward got around the corner, and Shelby Harris got a big hand up to block the Green Bay kick. The Browns will have to come around on offense if they want to win many games this season, but they showed life in Week 3.

Coming off a 3-14 season, that win was a big one, and it’s even bigger that it came over a good team like the Packers. Cleveland has a tough road ahead with the Detroit Lions next, then games against the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns will have to be better on offense if they want to win any of those games, but the defense should undoubtedly keep them in each one.
