Last season, the Oklahoma Sooners dealt with more significant injuries than maybe any Power Four team in the country. This year hasn’t been nearly as bad, but the injuries are still there. However, they have some good news regarding some injuries as they enter the bye week.

On Wednesday, head coach Brent Venables informed everyone that cornerback Eli Bowen and wide receiver Javonnie Gibson have been practicing and will be looking to contribute to the team moving forward. This is great news, considering the bad news that Oklahoma got regarding quarterback John Mateer on Tuesday.

Sooners getting down-field threat in Gibson, potential lockdown CB in Bowen back

Neither guy has played this season, and yet, the Sooners have fared well in the two positions rooms they have been absent from. However, to end last season, Bowen was the best cornerback on the team. Entering this season, he was regarded as the CB1, with no questions asked.

Bowen was then hurt in fall camp and hasn’t been available since. Getting him back, whenever that is, will be huge for the Sooners. Not only do they have a true freshman in Courtland Guillory playing great, but they will then have Bowen, too. The only issue is that both of those guys are a bit shorter and play on the outside. But that’s something that Brent Venables can adjust.

As far as Gibson, he was one of the guys who worked down the field a bit in the passing game in spring camp before he got hurt. So far, the Sooners haven’t taken many deep shots downfield. There have been opportunities, albeit few, and when those were available, Mateer just didn’t pull the chance.

Isaiah Sategna is pretty much doing it all right now when it comes to the receiver room. They need help there because SEC play will likely only get harder. Gibson’s return is just another weapon for backup QB Michael Hawkins to have.
