It’s insane how little Billy Napier gets it

It’s almost comical at this point that Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier still has a job. He is 20-22 as the Gators head coach in his fourth season and coaches with better resumes have been fired by the university. Jim McElwain lost his job with a 22-12 record, yet Napier still has his.

The biggest factor in his struggles during his four years has been on the offensive side of the football. He has yet to relinquish play calling or hire a capable offensive coordinator, and it’s been a major point of contention, especially after the success of Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell and Missouri Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz have had massive success giving it up.

Billy Napier refuses to give up play calling

During Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference, Napier was asked if he would still be calling the plays, and it was a one word answer: “Correct.”

Napier prompted that question with this answer about the potential changes during the bye week.

“I think there’s a renewed emphasis on accountability,” said Napier about the offense. “Obviously, we have to play better. Every position group is contributing to our issues, so I know obviously a lot is made of DJ [Lagway] and his situation, but I do think when we look at it from a big picture standpoint, we’ve got to play better around them. And then, just some of the points of emphasis are eliminating negative plays. And I do think that first-down efficiency has contributed to some of our problems as well. But in general, I think we have to address that part of our team and there’s gotta be some changes, and certainly that’s what we’re doing.”

Things are so bad that the fans are turning on Lagway, who has given everything to the program.

It’s another batch of excuses from the Gators’ head coach, with the number one issue being Napier’s scheme and play calling. It’s incredibly predictable across the board and is the one thing holding the team back. If they had a capable offensive coordinator, the Gators would likely be 3-0 right now, as the defense has been incredible considering how futile the offense has been.

When will things change in Gainesville? As we continue to see, they aren’t going to change with Napier as the head coach. He consistently refuses to do the one thing that could help get the team back on track, and his unwillingness to do so will get him fired.

Honestly, it’s for the best at this point.
