Every Washington Commanders fan has been holding their breath as we await any kind of injury update on All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

We finally have some clarity on the severity of the injury, and it’s the best possible news for the Commanders’ top offensive weapon. After leaving the game on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, McLaurin’s quad injury doesn’t seem as severe as some feared, and surgery isn’t needed.

Terry McLaurin avoids surgery

Breathe, Commanders fans. McLaurin has missed every day of practice so far this week, and the news broke that he was receiving multiple opinions on his injury; it remains unclear what exactly is wrong. Some reports suggest it’s a quad injury, while others indicate a hip flexor injury, which are very similar; however, the same result remains: surgery is not required. Even with the good news, his status for Sunday is “in doubt,” according to Ian Rapoport.

Head coach Dan Quinn said that players often seek multiple opinions on an injury, but people were still concerned after seeing who he consulted. McLaurin went to see Dr. William Meyers, the top core muscle doctor in the country, and players usually get surgery after seeing him.

“Yeah, it’s pretty normal that when you have something that a second opinion takes place,” Quinn said. “That’s not uncommon at all. Honestly, it’s just the opposite; it’s really common. Almost everybody does that in some spaces. So, I’ll have a better answer as I get into Friday, and then we’ll have a sense for, okay, where does it look like for Sunday?”

This doesn’t tell us how long he will be out for, but surgery would’ve set McLaurin out for six to eight weeks, which would’ve been absolutely brutal for a team that already has so many injuries, especially on offense. Quinn will provide updates on all the team’s injuries on Friday, or before kickoff, if any are true game-time decisions.

I would be genuinely surprised if McLaurin plays this week against the Atlanta Falcons and risks any kind of injury, just like Jayden Daniels with his knee. I think we see both return at the same time next week against the Los Angeles Chargers.
