The Ohio State Buckeyes are a well-balanced team and they showed that in their 24-6 win over the Washington Huskies on Saturday. Ohio State looked like what a No. 1 team should on the road against Washington and didn’t let a slow start throw them off. One of the more impressive things about the game was how well QB Julian Sayin played in his first road start.
Sayin was an efficient 22-of-28 passing for 208 yards and two scores against Washington in his first start away from Columbus. The numbers aren’t totally eye-popping, but the second-year college quarterback didn’t get rattled early in the game despite a slow start and leading just 7-3 at half over an unranked team. Ohio State is built to feel comfortable in these kinds of situations due to how they are built on the other side of the football.
Julian Sayin gives major credit to Matt Patricia’s defense after the win vs. Washington
“It’s awesome to watch. They’re so good in practice, it shows up on Saturdays,” Sayin told the media after the game. “It’s awesome to see Caleb, Sonny, all those guys making plays and it gives us a lot of confidence that they’re going to get stops for us.”
Ohio State plays complementary football very well and that’ll give them a chance to be in the mix to win it all this season. Losing Jim Knowles to Penn State hasn’t caused the Ohio State defense to miss a beat and they look like they may be the best group in college football once again. A Demond Williams-led Washington offense was averaging north of 500 yards of offense a game heading into Week 5. Ohio State held the Huskies to 234 yards of offense and just 61 rushing yards.
The Buckeyes often play conservatively at times on offense because of how good the defense is and that showed against the Texas Longhorns in the opener. Ohio State did what they needed to in the second half against Washington and the offense was able to get going. Sayin took a step forward against Washington and the defense continued to look elite with the stars stepping up like Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese, and Caden Curry. Ohio State will be back at home in Week 6 against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
