‘It’s gonna cost us a game’ – Ryan Day didn’t hold back on what needs addressed for Ohio State despite beating Washington

It’s mostly good for the Buckeyes right now, though Day has one issue that needs fixed.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are 4-0 on the season following their first road win of the season over the Washington Huskies. Ohio State handed Washington a 24-6 loss and it marked the Buckeyes’ first Big Ten win of the season. A slow start didn’t throw Ohio State off and they turned a 7-3 halftime lead into a win by three possessions. Playing against Washington was the first real test for the Buckeyes since the opener against Texas and they passed it. However, it isn’t all sunshine and flowers right now for Ohio State coming off the Week 5 win

Ryan Day isn’t totally happy after the Buckeyes dropped Washington

“We can’t be having these self-inflicted wounds,” Day said after the game. “It’s gonna cost us a game. So, that happened too many times in this game. We had five penalties. We can’t do that.”

Ohio State would have had terrific field position with about five minutes left in the first quarter and would have probably had more points if it weren’t for their only turnover of the game. Brandon Inniss had what would have been a nice return, instead was a fumble on a punt return inside Washington territory. Washington went down and scored a field goal off of that, we may have been looking at a 31-3 final if it weren’t for that.

The six penalties for 60 yards was something that Day pointed out as well and that he wasn’t fond of. A slow start isn’t strange for a team playing across the country and that’s what happened to the Buckeyes. Still, Ohio State managed the Washington crowd well and came alive on offense enough to match an elite def drive showing. The Buckeyes outgained Washington 357-234 in Week 5. Going into the game the Buckeyes were 8.5-point favorites in most places you looked and Ohio State more than covered that.

Good teams find their issues even through the wins and address them. Self-inflicted errors could really hurt the Bchekehs when they have to play teams like Penn State or Michigan later in the regular season. Day knows that and has lived that, so he’s trying to get ahead of the ball now.
