Kalen DeBoer revealed keys to defeating Georgia Bulldogs for Alabama and his star QB Ty Simpson’s role in that
Ty Simpson was integral part of the communication and execution that defeated Georgia
The Alabama Crimson Tide have come a long way since their opening loss to the Florida State Seminoles. Thanks to Kalen DeBoer, quarterback Ty Simpson, and the entire team executing at a high level, Alabama defeated Georgia 24-21 on Saturday as the Crimson Tide snapped a 33-game home winning streak for the Bulldogs.
How did they do it? According to Kalen DeBoer’s comments in postgame, it came down to excellent communication, leadership, and execution from his quarterback, Ty Simpson.
Communication and leadership from Ty Simpson were the keys to Alabama’s win over Georgia
Ty Simpson struggled at the beginning of the season, but since the loss to FSU he’s bounced back and developed into the leader that Alabama needs. When asked about that leadership, Simpson’s consistent checks at the line, quick communication, and even getting directly up and into the ears of every offensive linemen on some plays, DeBoer had this to say:
“It takes a lot of work when you get in an environment like we had today. They can’t hear [Ty Simpson] and you’ve got to make sure every word is heard. The effort that he put forth today, the energy he just showed in the locker room, he’s giving everything he has. We knew we were more than likely going to have to get right up there in their ear and tell them exactly what’s going on with protection checks, making sure everyone’s on the same page. If one guy blows an assignment or doesn’t hear something correctly now you’ve got a guy in your lap as the quarterback.”
Ty Simpson looked like a true field general on Saturday against Georgia. He was constantly making small changes, communicating with his linemen and running backs, getting his wide receivers in the right splits. Simpson was doing every single thing, executing every tiny detail to perfection, and it showed all game long.
Ty Simpson finished the game with 276 yards passing, two touchdowns, 12 rushing yards, and a rushing score as he just found the right answer on almost every play all night. He could have finished with an even bigger statistical showing had his star wide receiver Ryan Williams not dropped what would have been a 60-yard touchdown too.
Simpson, his running backs, the offensive line, everyone on that side of the ball for Alabama just looked on the same page and in sync throughout the game. So much so that they ended up converting 13 of 19 third down attempts (something near impossible against Georgia), including the most critical game-sealing conversion on a beautifully designed short pass to Jam Miller (as seen in post below).
Kalen DeBoer was still critical of his rushing attack and a few other small things the team could still improve on, but overall he was clearly proud of his team. He was proud of his offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb for calling a great game, committing to the run, and finding what was working. But he was most evidently and outspokenly proud of the communication and leadership from his quarterback, Ty Simpson.
If Simpson continues to develop the way he has, young weapons like running back Kevin Riley and Lotzeir Brooks continue stepping up in big moments, and the defense makes critical stops like they did against Georgia on Saturday, then Alabama is likely going to find themselves on a deep run into the College Football Playoff.
