Ja’Marr Chase explains his viral sideline moment with head coach Zac Taylor during Bengals’ rough loss against Broncos
Chase and Taylor were seen exchanging words deep into Cincinnati’s 25-point loss in Denver.
Ja’Marr Chase and the Cincinnati Bengals are not happy campers right now. The Bengals were blown out for the second-straight week in the form of a 28-3 loss to the Denver Broncos.
The entire country got a chance to see Cincinnati’s faults through and through, as well as what looked like a frustrated Chase exchanging words with head coach Zac Taylor during the second half of the ugly defeat.
The footage was talked about by the ESPN broadcast duo of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman and eventually reached the online conversation. Chase was then asked about the moment after the game by reporters.
Ja’Marr Chase defuses speculation over mid-game exchange with Zac Taylor
Chase and the Bengals had just come off the field after yet another failed offensive possession. It was their sixth-straight that resulted in a punt. The fifth-year wide receiver said his words to Taylor were only about what had just happened.
“We were just talking about the possession,” Chase told reporters in the locker room. “We were just talking about what plays we can run and how can we attack certain coverages and get our playmakers the ball.”
Chase then took to X/Twitter to reinforce what he said.
Ja’Marr Chase’s stats since Week 3
- 10 receptions
- 11 targets
- 73 yards
- 0 touchdowns
Chase ended the night with five receptions for 23 yards. His previous career-low for receiving yards in a game in which he caught at least five passes was 29 yards back in 2022. 4.6 yards per reception is the second-lowest in his career, only behind the three yards he gained on one catch against, coincidentally, the Broncos back in 2021.
This is not the production to be expected out of the top-ranked receiver entering the season, with or without Joe Burrow throwing him the ball. It’s on Taylor to ensure Chase is fed with easy yardage and opportunities, but Chase also wants the offense as a whole to be put in better situations to advance the ball.
“It’s hard knowing the type of offense we have and the weapons we have,” Chase said.
Cincinnati has scored just 13 points in the last two weeks. The spark they had right after Burrow’s injury in Week 2 has completely faded at this point. If things continue down this road, interactions like the one between Chase and Taylor may become more intense and not as productive.
