The opening game loss for the Alabama Crimson Tide against the Florida State Seminoles feels like a long time ago.  Since then, the Crimson Tide looks like a different team and has handled its business. Wins over Louisiana-Monroe, Wisconsin, and then the Georgia Bulldogs have Bama back in a pretty good position. The energy has been much different since that opening loss and it has a lot to do with the guy playing quarterback.

Ty Simpson is impacting the Alabama defense along with the offense

Alabama held Georgia to 21 points on the road this past Saturday and that’s about as good a defensive performance you can ask for against the Bulldogs. Alabama had one fumble forced and the defense was playing with a ton of energy in a hostile environment. That edge that the defense is playing with leads partially back to Simpson.

“I’ve known Ty since he was 6 years old. And so, certainly, this is a team that I think is playing with an edge right now,” Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said on Monday. “I think Ty is a huge piece to us playing with an edge I think defensively we’re playing more with an edge. So when you go do the things, and you put the things on tape against Florida State, and then have to go answer the bell like we have the last few weeks and get a road win in the SEC, it was a good moment, a special moment between him and I.”

Wommack and Simpson shared a moment together after that big win over Georgia and that shows their bond even if they are on opposite sides of the football. You don’t always see the coordinator from the other side of the ball giving this kind of praise to an offensive player, but it’s been earned. Going 24-of-38 for 276 yards and two touchdowns to no turnovers was a great showing for Simpson. He’s been stellar all season for the Tide and is averaging 285 passing yards a game with 11 touchdowns to no interceptions on the season.

There’s no doubt that Alabama picked the right quarterback to lead them this season. Adversity hit after losing to Florida State and Simpson has buckled in and looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Playing Vanderbilt at home will be another tough task for Alabama, as the Commodores come in ranked as the No. 16 team in the country. If Bama can keep rolling with the edge they’ve been playing with, the Crimson Tide are going to be in a terrific spot as the stage gets bigger.
