The Alabama Crimson Tide are set to welcome the Vanderbilt Commodores to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, which is a matchup between two Top-16 teams in college football right now. Traditionally a bottom dweller of the SEC, head coach Clark Lea’s Commodore squad is in unique territory with that high of a ranking next to their name. That also creates even more intrigue for Kalen DeBoer’s Crimson Tide, especially with how they have seemingly been turning their season around recently.

There is also a layer of revenge in this matchup as well after Alabama lost to Vanderbilt by a score of 40-35 last season. Seeing the Vanderbilt fans hoist the goal post following the upset and carry it all over Nashville has to still be ingrained in the Crimson Tide players who were a part of the loss a year ago. Even though Alabama starting quarterback Ty Simpson didn’t play in the football game as the main backup for Jalen Milroe, that loss has stuck with him.

In an interview with On3, Simpson spoke about the upcoming matchup. He sent out a strong warning about his team’s attention to detail this time around.

“I wasn’t playing but I was on the team and so I felt how it was last year,” Simpson told On3. “The mentality in the locker room this week is ‘we remember what happened last year and what are we going to do about it?’ Even though it’s not about last year, it’s about us, we’re not gonna make the same mistake again. You know what I mean?

“They’re not the same team as last year and neither are we,” Simpson continued. “They’re better and we’re better in some ways. This is a top-25 matchup with College GameDay coming here. This is a really, really good Vanderbilt team and it could be one of the biggest games of the year. We need to come in with the mentality like we’ve had in the last couple of games with a chip on our shoulder. Like it’s Alabamavs. The World.”

Unlikely Heisman Trophy battle

After an ordinary start against the Florida State Seminoles, Simpson has been fantastic over the last few weeks. On the season, the redshirt junior has thrown for 1,138 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 6-2, 210-pound passer has also completed nearly 70 percent of his passes with no interceptions, while also rushing for two more touchdowns. He has been one of the very best quarterbacks in all of college football so far.

On the other side of this matchup, Vanderbilt will be led by Diego Pavia. Also considered a Heisman Trophy contender, Pavia has thrown for 1,211 yards and 13 interceptions so far, while also completing nearly 75 percent of his passes and two interceptions. The former New Mexico State star has also rushed for 294 yards and two more scores on the season. He hopes to be the main catalyst for another upset over the Crimson Tide on Saturday.
