Las Vegas Raiders’ offseason idea suddenly looks brilliant when it didn’t just a few months ago
The Las Vegas Raiders will be without Kolton Miller for some time.
After a brutal loss to the Chicago Bears, the Las Vegas Raiders got some bad news regarding one of their best offensive players, left tackle Kolton Miller. According to Ryan McFadden of ESPN, Miller suffered a high ankle sprain and a hairline fracture, which means he could be out for a long time.
In the offseason, the Raiders drafted Charles Grant, a left tackle from William and Mary. At the time, it was a great decision because everyone thought the Raiders would not pay Miller his extension. However, they then paid Miller, so the decision to draft Grant started to look a bit suspicious.
Now, they look brilliant, as it’s clear that Grant could be the starting left tackle from here on out. Well, maybe not exactly right away.
Charles Grant will have to fight for a starting spot on the Raiders’ OL
Earlier this week, head coach Pete Carroll stated that, as of now, Stone Forsythe is the backup to Miller, given his extensive experience. He also mentioned that Grant will compete for the job.
Grant was a fourth-round pick, just before his fellow rookie and offensive lineman Caleb Rogers, who will likely be an interior offensive lineman. Grant has to get acclimated to the NFL’s style of play quickly because he didn’t play the best competition in college. At William and Mary, he played pretty much all FCS schools. But his tape was as good as it gets.
The NFL is much harder, though. Grant will also be tasked with holding down Geno Smith’s blind side, which is easier said than done. Not to mention, the Raiders just now got the run game going, and with a new left tackle, that could be hard to sustain. Only time will tell.
