Notre Dame football put together a nice defensive performance against the Boise State Broncos. It was very important for one important recruiting target.

Notre Dame linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (27) prepares for a snap in the first half of a NCAA football game against Texas A&M at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, in South Bend.

Head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football were able to come out with a 28 to 7 victory over the Boise State Broncos on Saturday at home. While the offense was pretty inconsistent on the day, Chris Ash’s defense had its best overall performance of the season. They allowed just 2.9 yards per carry on the ground, and were also able to force four interceptions as a defense.

This was the ideal performance to try and impress 2027 Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel linebacker Roman Igwebuike, who was on campus. Considered one of the best overall players in the area, the Fighting Irish staff finally decided to offer the Chicago standout this weekend. It’s hard to imagine that Igwebuike could watch guys like Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa fly around on the second level during the win and not get a little bit excited.

Elite local talent

Igwebuike is considered to be a four-star player and Top-100 recruit by multiple of the major recruiting platforms right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the talented linebacker currently ranks as the No. 98 overall player, the No. 5 linebacker, and the No. 6 player from the state of Illinois for the 2027 recruiting class. Keeping top talent “at home” should always be a top priority for the Irish staff.

As Igwebuike mentioned in his original post, a long list of impressive programs have already been pursuing him, over 40 of them to be exact. Some of the top offers for the Chicago native include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Miami, USC, Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Nebraska, Arizona State, Arkansas, Louisville, Iowa State, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, NC State, Mississippi State, Maryland, Illinois, Kansas State, Syracuse, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, Washington, West Virginia, Baylor, Kansas, and Purdue among others.

Leading one of the top programs in high school football, Mount Carmel is loaded with next level talent. The 6-3, 220-pound linebacker is one of the team’s top overall talents, which is saying something. He has the combination of size, explosiveness, and physicality to become a stellar inside linebacker on the next level. The versatility that Igwebuike brings is extraordinary.

Igwebuike also isn’t the only Mount Carmel player that Notre Dame is pursuing in the 2027 class. Wide receiver Quentin Burrell is arguably the most important pass catcher on the board for the Irish staff right now. The 6-3, 175-pound athlete is the type of boundary receiver that this team needs to attract more and more.

Notre Dame is also pushing hard for defensive back Tavares Harrington. A similar size to Burrell, Harrington possesses good movement skills and length to potentially stick at cornerback. His size and tenacity also projects favorably at safety as well. Wherever he lands, Harrington has a chance to be an extremely valuable defender.

Closing on the talent in Chicago is a high priority for this Notre Dame team in the 2027 class. Igwebuike is very much a big part of that equation. As are several of his high school teammates at Mount Carmel.
