The Cleveland Browns have two rookie quarterbacks on their roster, and Week 5 was their first time going to one of those. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel got the nod against the Minnesota Vikings in London after the Browns benched veteran QB Joe Flacco. It was the right move when the decision was made, and it stands as the right decision following Gabriel’s first start in the NFL.

Cleveland gave up a game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds remaining on a nice pass from Vikings QB Carson Wentz to WR Jordan Addison. The Browns fell 21-17 and gave up 349 total yards to the Minnesota offense, which is the most they’ve surrendered in a game this season. Cleveland had a bad fourth quarter and lost a game they probably shouldn’t have given its +2 turnover differential.

Myles Garrett answers how Dillon Gabriel looked for the Browns

“He looked like he usually does,” Garrett said following the game. “Composed [and] making the plays that we know he can make. He put us in position to win. We have to help ourselves out.”

That’s a nice confidence boost for Gabriel, hearing that he put Cleveland in a position to win from the best player on the team. Gabriel completed 19-of-33 passing for 190 yards and two scores. Cleveland’s rookie didn’t turn the ball over, and that was a breath of fresh air from the first four games.

The Browns were forced to go away from Flacco in large part due to the eight turnovers he had through the first four games of the season. Gabriel shared the approach fans will want to hear now that the team is 1-4 on the season.

“There’s a lot to improve on, but I think in moments like these, you find true competitors, you find people who want to be here—what I know about our guys is we continue to work hard, continue to grind,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel wasn’t perfect in any way in his first start, and there were a few passes that he sailed and would like to have back. But Cleveland’s offense had 322 yards and was a couple of finished drives away from winning. There are no moral victories, and Cleveland’s start to the season has not been good, but Gabriel’s debut was a positive to take away from Week 5.
