Ohio State remains the No. 1 team in the country following its blowout win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Week 6 of the college football season. A 42-3 win over Minnesota has the Buckeyes sitting at 5-0 with a 2-0 record in Big Ten play. Week 6 was Ohio State’s only home game of the month and they didn’t miss a beat in their second conference game of the season.

It was a complete performance for the Buckeyes, who didn’t allow any points after Minnesota’s opening drive field goal. The Buckeyes gave up 162 yards of offense to Minnesota and a whopping 66 of those yards came on the first drive. Once Matt Patricia’s group settled in, this one was pretty much over.

P.J. Fleck had some high praise for the Buckeyes’ defense after the game

“I mean, that’s one of the best defenses l’ve ever seen in thirteen years,” Fleck said after the game. “And I mean that because I never met Coach Patricia, I got a chance to see him after the game, but it’s not just the players, it’s the depth that’s exceptional. That’s off the charts, it’s some of the best l’ve seen.”

Ohio State’s defense is giving up just five points per game through five games and they’ve given up just one touchdown in the last four games combined. On the season, the Buckeyes have surrendered just two touchdowns and teams are only averaging 215 yards per game when going up against them. Patricia’s unit is playing at as high a level as anyone could hope for at this point and it’s allowed the Buckeyes to be a lot more diligent with how they bring along their offense.

Continuing the defensive excellence is going to give Ohio State a great chance at repeating and winning it all again this season. Going into the year it was known that Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles were stars, but other players like Arvell Reese, Caden Curry, and Kayden McDonald have been able to break out. When the opposing coach is saying you have the best defense he’s ever seen at this level of coaching, you’re doing something right.
