Chiefs could exploit Jaguars’ defensive scheme led by young player who has yet to have his breakout performance
A new weapon could emerge for Kansas City against the Jaguars.
The Kansas City Chiefs will look to keep their offense hot as they take on a tough Jacksonville Jaguars team on Monday Night Football.
The Jaguars are off to a good start with a 3-1 record and will no doubt bring the energy at home under the primetime lights. They are led by their opportunistic defense, which leads the NFL in forced turnovers with 13 through four games.
The Chiefs are coming off a week in which they put up their highest point total since Week 3 of the 2023 season. If it can take care of the ball, Kansas City’s offense could keep the momentum rolling against Jacksonville, and potentially pave the way for one of its most hyped rookies to make his presence felt.
Chiefs rookie WR Jalen Royals could have breakout performance vs. Jaguars
Royals had an impressive training camp, often running with the first-team offense while establishing a strong chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes (H/T Price Carter). Unfortunately, he injured his knee during the preseason, which cost him the first two games of the regular season.
Royals has been active during each of the last two games, but has played just 14 snaps on offense and has yet to receive a target. He did return one kickoff last week against the Baltimore Ravens for 30 yards.
Now that Royals is a couple of weeks removed from his injury and has gotten his feet wet a bit, Monday night’s matchup against the Jaguars could be the perfect time for the Chiefs to unleash him. When Royals was drafted by K.C. in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, he drew instant comparisons to Rashee Rice.
Among the similarities between the two are their abilities to find the soft spots against zone coverage and get yards after the catch with their impressive combination of size and speed. The Jaguars are a heavy zone coverage defense, which could provide the opportunity for Royals to get involved and show what he can do.
The Chiefs are still without Rice as he continues to serve his suspension through Week 6. Getting Royals going over the next two games would establish yet another weapon within K.C.’s offense. Second-year WR Xavier Worthy provided a tremendous boost when he returned from a shoulder injury last week, and Rice will take the offense to another level when he gets back.
