The Las Vegas Raiders missed both tight ends, Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, against the Indianapolis Colts. That’s not why they only scored six points, but it certainly didn’t make things easier. Bowers is the best tight end in football and an integral part of the Raiders’ future, so his and Mayer’s health is one of the most important things to the Raiders right now

“Yeah, Mike [Michael Mayer] has his opportunities tomorrow to get cleared, and we’ll see how that goes. Fingers crossed on all that, he feels like he’s ready to go, and has felt like that. But the protocol is challenging, and we respect it. Brock [Bowers] — he’s week-to-week. We got to see what’s going on and see if we can get him back. And he’s dying to play. We went all the way till Saturday’s walk-through to see if he could go, and it didn’t feel like he could. So, we’ll just start over again, do it again this week,” head coach Pete Carroll said Monday.

Getting those two healthy will only help get the offense where it needs to be.

Raiders need something to help fix the offense

Like we stated earlier, not having Mayer and Bowers is not why the offense was so bad, but it certainly played a part. Right now, you would think you’re watching the same exact team as last year under Antonio Pierce, as seeing how the biggest issue there was the offense.

However, with this offense, I’m not sure it’s a scheme issue or even a playcalling issue. Sure, both of those can be better at times; however, I think the run game, offensive line, and quarterback play have just been so bad that it’s hard to overcome anything.

The defense is a fine unit, nothing incredibly special, but nothing terribly bad, either. They’re being put in bad positions by the offense over and over again, though, and it’s making them look bad.

The biggest thing about he offense that’s so puzzling is that the Raiders invested so much into that side of the ball in the offseason, whether it was trading for former Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith, or hiring a new OC in Chip Kelly, who had an incredibly successful offense with the Ohio State Buckeyes last season.
