Head coach Sean McDermott had a mic drop moment on Monday, following the team’s Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots.

McDermott opened up his media availability with an update on injuries before diving into questions surrounding the contest. That’s when the topic, of course, came up about quarterback Josh Allen and his abilities on the football field.

Specifically, McDermott was asked whether he could feel Allen wanting to press at times and run a little bit more.

“I think at times, maybe. You know, overall, Josh is a competitor; he wants to win,” McDermott said. “He’s going to do what he feels like he needs to do to help his team win. I’m never going to question his competitiveness. I think some of it was just that. Other times, maybe trying to do a little too much. Josh is Josh for a reason, as much as he makes those great plays, somewhere in there, he’s going to show he’s human once in a while. He wants some of those plays back.”

Josh Allen put the team on his back, once again

The reigning MVP led the team in rushing yards with 53 yards on nine carries. That’s when McDermott revealed his perfectly fitting nickname for Allen: the human eraser.

“He’s as competitive with those plays after they don’t go his way as he is with the great plays he’s made over the years,” McDermott added. “He’s the human eraser, that’s what I refer to him as. He makes things go when there’s nothing there to be had; he is who he is for a reason. He drives the level of play of everyone on our football team.”

Josh Allen rushing stats by year

  • 2018: 89 carries, 631 yards, eight TDs
  • 2019: 109 carries, 510 yards, nine TDs
  • 2020: 102 carries, 421 yards, eight TDs
  • 2021: 122 carries, 763 yards, six TDs
  • 2022: 124 carries, 762 yards, seven touchdowns
  • 2023: 111 carries, 524 yards, 15 TDs
  • 2024: 102 carries, 531 yards, 12 TDs
  • 2025: 40 carries, 212 yards, three TDs

McDermott is a heck of a coach, and it’s because of his willingness to be open and relate to everyone in the room. His honesty, in the face of adversity, was refreshing. While it’s only a nickname for the talented signal-caller, it adds some much-needed light to an otherwise awful Monday.

It’s moments like these that show why McDermott and Allen have built such a special bond over the years. Mutual trust, mutual accountability, and a shared obsession with winning. Having the human eraser on the team is basically like having a superpower, even if it didn’t fully erase the stain that was Sunday night’s game against the Patriots.
