The Philadelphia Eagles will be without left guard Landon Dickerson when they face the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

Dickerson went down early in the Eagles’ Week 5 loss to the Denver Broncos with an ankle injury and did not return. The Eagles’ run game was already questionable with Dickerson in the mix, and without him, it only got worse from there. The Eagles ran the ball 11 times versus Denver, and Saquon Barkley touched the ball on the ground just once in the second half.

His lack of touches mixed with Dickerson’s injury had many concerned.

Will Dickerson’s Absence Affect Philly’s Run Game? It Could.

Ahead of Philly’s Week 6 outing, head coach Nick Sirianni was asked if Dickerson’s absence would totally affect the run game. While he wasn’t direct, he made it clear that things could change without their starter, even if they are confident in their backups.

“As far as Landon, [he’s] obviously a phenomenal football player. So yeah, of course, when you lose a guy like Landon Dickerson, that is who he is,” Sirianni said. “He is a great football player, but we have so much faith and belief in everybody that’s on this 53-man roster. For that matter, the guys that are also on the practice squad have built up reps. [OL] Brett [Toth] built up reps with us, and [G/T] [Matt] Pryor’s got built up reps with us. We have faith in them when they go in because we’ve seen it, [T] Fred [Johnson], you name it. So it’s not something new, it’s the life of doing business in the NFL. So, have a lot of confidence in those guys behind Landon too. But of course we have a ton of confidence in Landon and the things that he can do.

That being said, if the Eagles can’t get the run game going without Dickerson, expect them to rely heavily on the passing game.

“We want to get [WR] AJ [Brown] touches, we want to get [WR] [DeVonta] Smitty [Smith} touches, we want to get Saquon touches, we want to get [TE] Dallas [Goedert] touches. That’s just the flow,” Sirianni said. “I think that’s why you have to look at the big picture of the body of work that we’ve had so far, as opposed to any in-game scenario. You’re doing everything you can do in-game to win. Now with that being said, of course we want to get Saquon the ball, but sometimes it’s getting him the ball through the pass game.”
