The Las Vegas Raiders have to get quarterback Geno Smith going because so far, he has looked like maybe the worst quarterback in the NFL, and that’s not what anyone repping or wearing the Silver and Black signed up for. Smith had some great years as the Seattle Seahawks QB, and that hasn’t translated at all to Vegas.

So, how do the Raiders make things easier on Smith? Well, head coach Pete Carroll knows how, and he just accidentally gave the Tennessee Titans, the Raiders’ Week 6 opponent, the recipe for causing chaos.

“Yeah, we’ve got to run the football better, more, and we’re going to continue to work at it and see if we can continue to bring it to life. The running game has looked good so far. We don’t want to ever rely on the quarterback having to do the whole show and sitting in a shotgun, throw the football. I never coached that way. And so, we have to mix our stuff so that we can use our play action game and make sure that we’re perimetering the game with all the ways that you can, which we have,” Carroll said when asked how to help Geno Smith out more.

“And I was pleased with how we saw Ashton [Jeanty] come to life on the edge. He made some nice plays and just stretched the defense and put some threat in them with that. And then we got to make sure that we’re calling all the best stuff in the situations. I mean, he’s not calling the plays. We got to call them, and we got to make sure and get him in the right spots and give him the best chance to stay out of harm’s way. And part of that is really controlling the game with what we do up front in the running game.”

Raiders can’t let the Titans knock them off their rhythm

Raiders QB Geno Smith 2025 Stats

  • 1-4 QB record in 2025
  • 65% Completion Percentage
  • 106 Completed Passes on 163 Passing Attempts
  • Six Passing Touchdowns
  • Nine Interceptions
  • 1,176 Passing Yards
  • 38.8 Quarterback Rating

Everyone knows just from watching the first five games of the season that if you take away the Raiders’ run game, they are almost nothing. Then, they cannot pass the ball, which means they cannot move the ball down the field. That has caused Smith to make errors and force throws that just aren’t there. We all know that, including the Titans.

However, Carroll just flat-out said what will throw Smith off the most, doing all of the Titans’ work for them outside of what they have to do during the actual game. He’s right, though, the run game does need to be better, while it has looked good the last few games. And the playcalling is not something that Smith has control over.

If the Titans stop the run and put pressure on the pocket, it’s going to be a long day for Smith, and make no mistake, they have the roster to do that. Sure, the Titans are 1-4, with their first win coming last week against the Arizona Cardinals, but they have one of the best defensive tackles in the league in Jeff Simmons, who plays the run and the pass extremely well.

This game will show just how bad the Raiders are, or how good they can be; they just can’t let Smith throw the ball to the other team.
