Injuries have been a major theme for the Minnesota Vikings throughout the first five weeks. Just on the offensive side of the football, they have lost 13 games to starters, with most of them coming on the offensive line.

Outside of the offensive line, the other big injury was to quarterback J.J. McCarthy. After missing his entire rookie season, he missed the last three games to a high ankle sprain. He’s been in the building and even traveled overseas to Europe for the Vikings’ two-game road trip, but McCarthy didn’t play in either game.

It can take an emotional toll on anyone who has had to deal with this type of injury luck like McCarthy has. What it hasn’t done is hindered the Vikings starting quarterback.

Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard made an appearance on Up and Adams, where he raved about McCarthy’s mental fortitude.

“I would be in the dumps more because I got a taste of it. I’ve waited so long. I’m mentally ready, we’re ready to go to a Super Bowl, and then I have the setback, like that would send me spiraling,” said Greenard about what happened to McCarthy. “Not him. I definitely see that. I think the maturity aspect, him having his son now, everything kind of slowed down for him at times now, so he has a different perspective on things, which is great for him.”

Finding that perspective when you become a parent can be a big deal, something Greenard knows.

“I remember, I had my daughter during the season when I was in Houston, and it kind of put everything in perspective. I made it seem to where things weren’t happening,” said Greenard. “And I had a coach to tell me, too obviously, in Cleveland, ‘I could say things don’t happen to you, to happen for you, and you don’t really see things at that time in that perspective.’ But it may seem like, ‘Well, why do I have to sit out in order for me to enjoy the benefits that I’ve worked for?’

“But you know, when you kind of sit down and go, ‘Okay, well, maybe this happened for another reason. Maybe I need to look at something deeper or do something else.’ It just gives you all that time to figure it out. And I think he’s just been a pro with that and being more mature in that aspect. So that way, when he does come back, it’s no fall off. I’m just picking it back up where I left off and bringing a little bit more to the table.”

Whenever you hear one of McCarthy’s teammates talk about him, it’s both glowing and mature. You would never know that McCarthy is 22 based on those conversations. He is wise beyond his years and it shows in many ways.

Once McCarthy comes back into the fold, you can trust he will be ready to roll.
