Just a few days before the Missouri game, the Alabama Crimson Tide had a result no team ever wants to see. A star player popped up on the injury report. That was the case with WR Ryan Williams ahead of Saturday’s game.

Then came the contest in Columbia, and Williams was utilized few and far between. He ended the game with just one reception for one yard despite it being a four-quarter game that came down to the wire, 27-24 in favor of Alabama.

And now we know why, as DeBoer confirmed that Williams is dealing with a lingering injury.

Ryan Williams’ lack of production against Missouri due to injury

“Just something [that] carried over from last week’s game,” said DeBoer of Williams’ injury during his postgame presser. “It would’ve been earlier in the game last week, just took a hit, and so just hobbled. He didn’t get to practice much this week. That’s why he was on the report, which makes it a little harder to get him out there.

“Especially when you have the confidence in other guys to go make plays. I haven’t gotten the report, exactly, of how he got through. I know he was out there and did help us. I would expect him to continue to make progress. He’s not that far away.”

College football is mysterious when it comes to injuries. Until recently, many schools wouldn’t (and some still don’t) release injury reports. It’s not like the NFL, where you can bank on one every Wednesday through Friday, and an inactive report is issued 90 minutes before kickoff.

So there is a chance we never find out exactly what happened to Williams or what injury he is dealing with. That being said, the fact that he was out there at all is a good sign. Not only for his availability, but for Ty Simpson and the projection of this team.

If Alabama can go on the road and beat a top 15-ranked SEC school without their best playmaker, lose two more to scary injuries, and still see their quarterback put up a potential Heisman moment with his throw on fourth and 8, I would say that team projects to do well.

With the Tennessee Volunteers on deck, Alabama will need all the help it can get, meaning the return of Jam Miller and Williams to practice should be closely monitored throughout the week.
