The New York Giants desperately need to trade for a wide receiver if they want to spark a quick turnaround.

Since losing second-year star Malik Nabers, the passing offense has lacked juice. Making a move has become a talking point around the fanbase as it’s eager to boost the offensive weapons around rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the Giants just made adjustments to two players’ contracts that will free up cap space for a potential trade.

Giants increase cap space by restructuring two veterans’ contracts

This offseason, the Giants were big spenders when they added safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo. Holland’s current cap hit is $9.9 million, and Adebo’s is $11.7 million, per Over the Cap.

Before the move, the Giants had less than $1 million in available space to make any significant moves. With the NFL trade deadline approaching on Nov. 4, a move like this often indicates a team is attempting to create space to make a trade.

If the Giants traded for a veteran with a sizeable contract, they might need to make additional contract adjustments to create the necessary space. A commonly projected name for the Giants to trade for is Las Vegas Raiders WR Jakobi Meyers, who has a $14.9 million cap charge. A cheaper option would be New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave, who would only have a $6.1 million cap charge.

The bigger complication for the Giants to make a trade is their draft pick situation. They don’t possess their 2026 third-round pick, which they sent to the Houston Texans. A third-round pick would be highly valuable in a negotiation for a quality receiver.

Ultimately, this contract adjustment does not mean the Giants are aiming to make a trade before the deadline. It could simply be a move needed to free up space because they were operating under a tight cap, should they need to add a free agent in the future.

The next few weeks in the NFL will be loaded with drama, as many contending teams, more eager than the Giants, will be aggressive in making moves. Hopefully, the Giants aren’t boxed out of any of the top names at receiver; otherwise, it will be a long season of woeful passing production. This is especially true given the lack of solid free agents available.
