When defenses plan for the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offense, Jeremiah Smith is usually the first name that comes to mind. However, the Buckeyes’ big-play threat in their win over Wisconsin was once again Carnell Tate.

Tate hauled in two touchdowns on six catches for 111 yards in Ohio State’s 34–0 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in Week 8 of the college football season. The Buckeyes pitched their second shutout of the year. In fact, the only time they’ve allowed double-digit points this season was last week, when Illinois managed 16. Ohio State’s offense was dominant through the air against Wisconsin, perfectly complementing its stifling defense.

Carnell Tate takes a Heisman stand for Julian Sayin

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin had a career day, throwing four touchdowns while completing 36 of 42 passes for 394 yards. The Buckeyes’ run game contributed just 97 yards on the ground, but it didn’t matter — they did whatever they wanted through the air. Sayin connected with 10 different receivers and now sits at 19 passing touchdowns to just three interceptions this season.

“He’s the truth. He’s the Heisman winner. Ain’t no question, ifs, ands, or doubts,” Tate said of Sayin after the game. “Each and every week, he goes out there and proves to us why he’s the Heisman winner.”

Sayin has now passed for over 300 yards in four games and has nearly 1,900 passing yards on the season. The sophomore quarterback has continued to progress, with the Buckeyes putting more on his plate each week and stretching the field more often. Ohio State aired it out as much as it has all season against Wisconsin, and Sayin’s best throw of the day was a 33-yard touchdown strike to Tate.

Filling in for Will Howard after he led the Buckeyes to a national championship, Sayin had some big shoes to fill in his first year as a starter. He’s now picked up back-to-back conference road wins and is playing as well as anyone. According to FanDuel, Sayin has the third-best odds to win the Heisman — and Saturday’s win over Wisconsin may have shifted that race even more in his favor.

Individual accolades are bound to pour in for this Ohio State team if it keeps playing at this level. Its goals remain clear: beat Michigan, win the Big Ten, and capture another national championship. And don’t be surprised if the Buckeyes finish the regular season with a Heisman winner, too.
