Ben Johnson gives his honest thoughts on the offensive performance in Week 7 despite pulling off a fourth consecutive win
The Chicago Bears offense had some major issues despite the win over the New Orleans Saints.
The Chicago Bears have now won four consecutive games and seem to be on a roll, but for those watching the last four games, it’s clear the Bears are still far from a finished product.
That should be a good thing, especially when you see how the Bears have played over the last two games coming out of the bye week. On both sides of the ball, the Bears have cleaned up the biggest weaknesses and turned them into strengths.
Yet, when looking specifically at the offense, it’s clear the unit is still not up to head coach Ben Johnson’s high standard, and rightfully so.
Ben Johnson still isn’t pleased with the Bears’ offense in 2025
“Up and down,” Johnson said to describe his offense after six games. “That’s what we’ve looked like. We haven’t hit our stride yet, offensively. We’re capable of a lot more; we have very talented individuals. I feel strongly about our coaching staff, but we’re just not complementing our defense.”
In Week 7 specifically, Dennis Allen’s unit forced four takeaways and had a turnover on downs. But the offense is still struggling to capitalize on some of those opportunities due to a lot of self-induced errors that continued on Sunday, and can’t seem to be cleaned up from what we’ve seen so far.
“I think it’s a lot of things,” Johnson added. “That’s something we’ll look at on the tape and see what we gotta clean up. We still have the false starts. The good thing was the running game was still working, and the passing game wasn’t nearly efficient enough for us here today.”
Good on Johnson finding the silver lining to hang the hat on while keeping the issues as an in-house problem to fix because the run game should be the story of this game. After a season-high performance in Week 6, the Bears rushed for over 220 yards on Sunday against the Saints.
D’Andre Swift led the team with 124 yards on 19 carries, but for the first time, the split was a lot more even with seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai getting more looks. Monangai finished the game with 81 yards on 13 carries, and both backs managed to find their way into the end zone. That’s the good.
On Monday, Johnson and the staff will look more into the bad and ways to make this offense more balanced as a whole. It’s still early in the season, so mistakes are expected, but eventually the Bears gotta start making some strides when it comes to cleaning up consistent problems. At the same time, wins are wins, and it’s great to see the Bears still coming out on top.
