Broncos’ Sean Payton reveals powerful message he shared with the team seconds after thrilling comeback win
Sean Payton didn’t hold back with his postgame comments.
A legendary fourth quarter propelled the Denver Broncos to a victory. The team erased a 19-point deficit to secure the victory with a game-winning field goal in the closing seconds.
For three quarters, the team looked sloppy on offense, with quarterback Bo Nix not getting anything going. The defense wasn’t as dominant as it had been in recent weeks, allowing quarterback Jaxson Dart to have a career day.
However, in the fourth quarter, Nix put the team on his back with four total touchdowns (two rushing, two passing), and a little luck from the Giants kicker missing two extra points.
In a night celebrating and honoring the legendary wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, it was fitting that the game ended in legendary fashion. Fans were leaving the stadium in bunches before the Broncos ultimately sealed the victory.
The Broncos are now atop the AFC West through seven weeks, a testament to the resiliency of this unit.
Immediately after the game, head coach Sean Payton made his feelings known about the contest, and his comments are quickly spreading like wildfire. It was an incredible win, with plenty to clean up moving forward.
“I was proud we fought to get back in it,” Payton said. “We had to find a way to clean up our mess. I told them, look, enjoy this, there’s some grit there, they didn’t quit, but it’s important we don’t let the euphoria of a win like that cloud the things they need to get cleaned up tomorrow.
“They’ll enjoy it tonight, but there are a lot of things that we’re still doing particularly offensively that trouble me,” Payton added. “We’ll get it fixed, we have to get it fixed.”
Fourth-quarter brilliance secures the win
Payton was asked about the fourth quarter being an all-timer in front of the Super Bowl 50 team. While Payton wasn’t perfect on the day, he was perfect with his postgame comments. It was an incredible response from one of the game’s best head coaches.
“I said to these guys prior to the game, I said, man, you’re playing for and I said the Super Bowl 50 team is important, but there’s also a player going into the Ring of Fame whose family is here, Courtland, you played with him, you’re playing for all these alumni that are back,” Payton said.
“We said it yesterday, and I’ll say it again now, they’re the lifeblood of the program,” Payton added. “Both Kerry and Greg have done a fantastic job of making that point of emphasis, anytime you’re back, you’re welcome. I love having them at practice. I remember the names, talk smack with Talib over the years, different teams, you name it.
“I could go through all the players. When you do something like that, you walk together forever,” Payton said.
Even after one of the most thrilling wins in Broncos history, Payton’s message was clear. The team must enjoy it, but don’t get comfortable. If Denver can fix the mess he mentioned, this team might be just getting started.
