Notre Dame football predicted to land elite five-star offensive playmaker following massive recruiting weekend for USC matchup
Notre Dame football is trending fast for a five-star offensive weapon.
Notre Dame football is coming off of a huge victory over rival USC this past weekend. While it wasn’t a perfect performance by any means, any time you are able to beat the Trojans, especially in front of the Fighting Irish fans in South Bend, it’s a great win. Head coach Marcus Freeman has gotten his team back on track after the team’s 0-2 start to the 2025 college football season.
On top of the important victory, the Fighting Irish staff also put together an outstanding recruiting weekend. Coach Freeman and his program were hosts to a long list of impressive 2027 and 2028 recruits over the weekend, which included a ton of elite talents. Following that visit, there is a lot of momentum surrounding Notre Dame recruiting. It wouldn’t be surprising to see several players to join the 2027 class in the near future.
Arguably the best player that visited South Bend this weekend was 2027 McKeesport (Pa.) High School running back Kemon Spell. Previously committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions, Spell backed off of that commitment after head coach James Franklin was fired. Even before that news, things were trending really well between the Irish and Spell. Things have continued to move quickly between the two sides.
Following the recruiting weekend, there is a lot of optimism for Notre Dame to eventually land the Pennsylvania native. Rivals vice president of recruiting Steve Wiltfong has logged an expert prediction for Spell to land with the Fighting Irish.
Kemon Spell’s recruiting background
Spell is currently ranked as at least a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Spell is pegged as a five-star recruit right now, and a Top-10 overall player nationally. He sits as the No. 8 overall player, the No. 1 running back, and the No. 1 player in the state of Pennsylvania for the 2027 recruiting class on that class ranking.
Even with that previous commitment to the Nittany Lions, a long list of impressive programs had continued to pursue Spell heavily. Some of his other top offers so far include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Florida State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and UCLA, among many, many, others.
As a sophomore in 2024, Spell put together a remarkable season for McKeesport. The 5-9, 205-pound runner managed to rush for 1,681 yards and 24 touchdowns on the year, while averaging an unbelievable 10.7 yards per carry. Spell also averaged nearly 14 yards per carry as a freshman on his way to 517 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in 2023 for the team.
Spell is currently putting together an even better season for McKeesport as a junior so far. He has had a couple of games right around 300 yards rushing, and just scored six touchdowns against Mars recently. This is an elite player who has the ability to score every time he touches the football. His high rankings are no accident, and Notre Dame is certainly high on everything that Spell brings to the table.
After landing Javian Osborne and Jonaz Walton in the 2026 recruiting class, Spell would be a tremendous addition if they are able to close. The elite backfields in South Bend aren’t going to stop any time soon.
