The Minnesota Vikings will be going into Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers in a similar spot. Despite starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy getting closer, Carson Wentz is set to be the starting quarterback on Thursday, and Max Brosmer will once again be the backup. McCarthy is going to be the emergency quarterback.

Carson Wentz will start vs. Chargers on Thursday

This is an expected move for the Vikings. Being that it’s a short week, it makes sense for Wentz to get the call on Thursday. Even so, there is a positive element to this whole discussion. McCarthy went through a workout on Tuesday, and there was some progress. The biggest thing that head coach O’Connell said was that if this were a Sunday game, McCarthy would have a chance to play.

“We did put JJ McCarthy through an on-field workout [this morning] just to see if he had a chance to make it this week. J.J., the medical staff, and I are all encouraged about where he’s at and the progress he’s making, but he’s just not there,” said O’Connell. “And if this were a Sunday game, maybe it would be a little bit of a different story, and we could push it throughout the week and see where he’s at towards the end of the week. But really, I look at today almost as the combination of a Wednesday and Thursday, but really, it is a Friday on the timeline of coming up on being 48 hours out from the game. So we wanted to have a plan at the quarterback position, and it’ll be very similar to last week. Carson will start, Max will be the backup, and JJ will be available in the case of an emergency as the third.”

It’s good news that McCarthy is getting closer to playing, but not being there quite yet is frustrating nonetheless. McCarthy will have 10 days to get ready for the Detroit Lions in Week 9.
