Shane Beamer admits he texted Alabama QB Ty Simpson’s dad ahead of the Crimson Tide playing South Carolina
Beamer knows what he’s going up against with the Alabama quarterback.
There was a good portion of the Alabama fanbase worried over the offseason about whether Ty Simpson had what it takes to help the Crimson Tide compete for a national title.
Flash forward to the present, and those worries now look silly. Alabama may have lost its season opener to the Florida State Seminoles, but the Tide have taken care of business since. They’ve picked up quality wins over Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. Next up is a 3-4 South Carolina team led by Shane Beamer — someone who knows Simpson well.
Shane Beamer gets real about Ty Simpson
“I texted his dad a couple nights ago,” Beamer said on Wednesday. “I was sitting there watching their offense on tape, and some of the throws Ty [Simpson] has made this season — I mean, they’re as good as any I’ve seen in a long time. Whether it be clutch plays like that fourth down against Missouri — they’ve got great coverage — he makes a heck of a throw. Or some of the pressure he was under against Tennessee the other night, and he’s still able to sit in the pocket. Tennessee’s got great coverage on a receiver, and Ty literally put the ball where only the receiver could catch it. I mean, they’re literally perfect throws while he’s under duress. To say he’s hot right now is an understatement, and that’ll be a big challenge for us.”
Beamer made sure not to offer any bulletin-board material for Alabama or its starting quarterback. Simpson is playing like he belongs near the top of the Heisman race, throwing for 1,931 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just one interception. He’s also shown his dual-threat ability with two rushing touchdowns. Simpson is doing all this while putting some highlight-reel throws on tape that are sure to have NFL scouts salivating.
Simpson was recruited by Beamer when he was at South Carolina, so the Gamecocks’ head coach is clearly familiar with both the player and his family. The fact that Beamer reached out to Simpson’s dad shows the kind of lasting relationships recruiting can build before college careers even begin. South Carolina’s defense has been solid, allowing just 171 passing yards per game — good for 28th nationally. Alabama will be on the road for this one, but the Tide are still two-score favorites, sitting between -12 and -13 on most sportsbooks.
