Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello reportedly agreed on Wednesday to become the San Francisco Giants’ new manager.

Vitello, who had been the head coach at Tennessee since 2017, led the Vols to incredible success. During his time on Rocky Top, Tennessee won a national championship and went to the College World Series in Omaha three times.

Tennessee’s 2022 team didn’t make it to Omaha, but they set a then program record with a 57-9 record (the win total was surpassed by Tennessee’s championship team in 2024).

Tony Vitello was reportedly “courted” by Texas A&M the last couple of years

The Giants weren’t the first team that tried to steal Vitello away from the Vols.

According to D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, Texas A&M “courted” Vitello “to some degree” the last couple of summers. Rogers noted that Vitello was “very committed” to Tennessee, but he simply couldn’t turn down an offer to manage in MLB.

What Vitello accomplished at Tennessee is nothing short of incredible — the wins and the complete shift in culture. His presence on Rocky Top will certainly be missed, but it’s understandable why he couldn’t say no to the Giants.
